Designing the Flea Circus Games Logo

Friday, January 18, 2008 link

A couple months ago, I showed how the Joystick Johnny interface was developed, from beginning to end.

In the same vein, the following image shows how the Flea Circus Games logo progressed from the early ideas to the final version.

Each logo is presented in chronological order, left-to right. Keep in mind I was still deciding on the company name and the look of the web site while I was working on it.

About the Design

When I started out, I knew I wanted a spotlight effect and an exaggerated color scheme to make it stand out in a weird way.

Since it would live mainly on the web, I worried less about what would look good on letter head or business cards. Requiring a certain background color can be problematic, but borders can be used to mitigate that (e.g. like in the right panel in this blog.)

Toward the beginning, I experimented with the visual joke of having the fleas be invisible, but in the end, it was better to make them a character of sorts, which could later be used in the web site graphics.

I also liked the idea of having a single dot as the company "identity" (5th row down), but I wanted to set up the idea of making formations out of them, which is something else that shows up on the site.

In the end, a neat logo is probably the least important thing when starting up a company (especially bootstrapping as an indie), but hey, I really wanted to do it. =)
